While working on a checkin app roundup for the newly launched Windows Phone 7 we noticed something odd. Facebook, which is a big partner for Microsoft and a key integration point on WP7 is lacking Facebook Places. The Facebook integration is centered around people and photos and honestly how many WP7 users are even going to miss Facebook Places?
Accessing Facebook on WP7 is near ubiquitous across the phone experience but the Facebook app itself seems dated. It will be interesting to see if an updated version with Places is coming in the near future. It seems logical given Facebook’s recent mobile announcements.
Additionally we couldn’t help but noticing that the Yelp app, while a great experience is also missing the ability to checkin. Your average app user doesn’t “checkin” and I imagine that the usage of these features on these services is pretty low. Additionally since the target user for WP7 isn’t your early normal adopter/checkin addict I doubt many people will notice or care.
But we do expect the checkin behavior will eventually gain mainstream adoption and it’s only a matter of time before these features are added.
