Restaurants Follow Foodies to Twitter

I love it when people ask me, in regards to Twitter: “Who cares what you had for breakfast?” I always respond: “I bet Kelloggs and Post do.”

Growing up in Boise, Id local success story Joe Albertson, founder of the Albertsons grocery chain, said: No matter what the economy is like, people will always need food. That’s not an exact quote, but you get the idea. Today seems to be the Twitter foodie day.

Intranet Famous Ross Mayfield (@Ross) posted a story I’d seen before but reminded me of two other stories. I think this first one is only possible in L.A.

Kogi Korean BBQ, a taco truck brought to you by Twitter - Los Angeles Times

The Kogi Korean BBQ taco truck. (@kogibbq on Twitter) After celebrating a Nov. 20 soft opening, the roving vehicle has emerged as a social-networking juggernaut, drawing 300 to 800 people each time it parks (often several times in an evening) and spawning a burgeoning cyber-hippie movement affectionately referred to as “Kogi kulture.”

This next one takes place in London and I especially like it because it was developed by fans of the bakery not by the bakery themselves.

Bakery uses its loaf and turns to Twitter

The updates are sent using BakerTweet, a small, white bakery-proof wireless device that sends messages to subscribers on the Internet, such as “Lovely loaves just out of the oven. Hurry,” or “Hot Cross Buns — fresh and hot like it’s name… come and get them!”

And of course this last one is an example of corporate marketers taking advantage of Twitter. The reason I like this one is because it shows how smart Kraft is. Kraft has a boatload of great marketing examples both Online as well as offline but most of them are geared towards moms. This is the first time I’m aware that Kraft has specifically targeted early adopters. It shows how smart Kraft is because I’m willing to bet that the #1 food at Tweetups is pizza. I know all of my TechBoise ones are.

There are probably hundreds of other examples of restaurants using Twitter. Which makes sense given the question on Twitter is “What are you doing?’ and we spend a lot of time eating.

Here some other examples I found by doing a quick search and asking my Twitter network.

@gernika - Location Boise, Idaho
@greekfood - Location Toronto Canada
@BajaSol - Location Twin Cities, MN; OH; IL

    Great post Tac - and love the ammunition answer for those unending questions about ‘why do I care what you had for breakfast’!!
    Have to admit, my tweets about the food I’m cooking or enjoying tend to get the biggest responses. And from the other side - I rely on my Twitter network for recommendations on dining, imbibing and all the other elements of my life that occur outside the 8-5 workday.
    Loved the Kraft idea for Tweetups!

    Don’t you love it when technology & food come together?
    @CostaVidaFred is the marketing guy behind the Twitter account and actually uses it! Through a quick Tweet, he has suggested me what to order as I stood in line. Their chef runs the @CostaVida Twitter, but is not that active, nor does he follow tweeple back….Fred is working on him.
    There is a coffee shop in Houston that actually uses their Twitter account along with TwitPay to take care of their customers in house as well as those putting in a to go order.

    I tried pitching something similar months ago to my local coffee drive through, but they just took my proposal in the drive through & traded me for my Chai.
    ahhh, the possibilities!
